Workout Tips - Who Do You Get Exercise Tips From

I've recently been thinking about this alot more and wanted to write about it. Who Do I get my exercise / workout / fitness tips from? Who should I take seriously? Who is this person that is recommending me specific tips for my body type, schedule, and goals?

I think this is something that everyone should really think about next time they are taking advice from a tv commercial or a personal trainer or a friend. Take every idea and tip when it comes to working out with a grain of salt.

Some things you should think about when getting tips are:
  • Why is this person recommending that i do this or use this product?
  • Is this person being paid to promote a product or service?
  • Has this person always had good genetics or have there been periods where their body resembled mine?
  • What is this person's schedule?
  • Are the tips im receiving from an "editor" at a website? (trust me, worthless)?
  • Does my friend know what she's talking about? Do i notice specific change in her or has she almost always looked that way?
  • Will it be good for me to at least try what they are recommending, or a waste of money and thought processes.
Now, this post is fairly broad, and i would rather let the reader open up his or her imagination then to list every possible consideration / factor of how you might think about or evaluate exercise tips / pointers from anyone and everyone.

For me personally, i often think about fitness magazines, especially bodybuilding ones.  These magazines are loaded with misleading garbage and promotions from steroid stackers. (Not just users, these guys eat, sleep steroids all day and do nothing but lift weights and eat tons).  Anyways, these guys are always promoting supplements that they attribute their physique or current results to.  As a long time lifter myself and fan of bodybuilding i know that these ads are complete nonsense, and that supplements for the most part are a complete waste of money and even more importantly THOUGHT PROCESSES.

Another personal example of heeding advice / tips is from a recent roomate i had.  He looks great, 6'5 and good muscles size and ripped abs.  Anyways, it is very hard for me to relate to anything he says about working out because i see that he is not the most disciplined guy when it comes to dieting.  Yes, he does lift a decent routine, and yes he looks alot better than i ever will.  However, when taking advice from him i have to take everything with a grain of salt, and discard alot of it, because i understand from a long time knowing him, that his genetics are a large part of his physique.

Anyways, i'll end this post and hopefully some of what i said makes sense and can help you think about or read material about exercise and workout tips in a more thoughtful way.  It is very important to analyze the person giving the tips.  Think about why they are giving the tips.  Think about whether or not you believe these tips that they are giving are very attributable to what they've achieved.

*note: i've been neglecting this blog lately largely because i've gotten off track with my workout and been writing tips online and such on other sites that seem to dominate my life right now.
